How to Repair Microsoft Office Picture Manager on Windows Vista

You are here:

Microsoft Office Picture Manager is a tool included with Microsoft Office 2003 and later. With it, you can view pictures and perform basic edits such as changing the size and dimensions of a picture. Microsoft Office includes multiple ways for users to have the computer automatically detect problems and reinstall software from the Office CD to replace Office components that have sustained damage. If you experience a problem with Microsoft Office Picture Manager such as unexplained errors or the application failing to load, use these tools to repair it.

  • Launch Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Click the “Help” pull-down menu along the top row of the window, and then click “Detect and Repair.” If you are unable to load Picture Manager at all, skip to Step 6.
  • Place a check in the box labeled “Restore my shortcuts while repairing,” but leaves the check out of the second box for now. Click “Start.” If Windows prompts you to insert the Microsoft Office CD, place it into your computer’s optical drive and click “OK.” Windows scans the program files for Picture Manager and, if needed, copies the original files from the CD and overwrites the files on the hard drive.
  • Click “OK” once the repair process finishes, then attempt to use Picture Manager again. If the application behaves normally, you have resolved the issue. If not, continue to Step 4.
  • Run the “Detect and Repair” operation in Picture Manager again. This time, place a check in the box labeled “Discard my customized settings and restore default settings.” Click “Start.” This process performs a more complete repair of Picture Manager by reverting all of the application’s settings to their defaults.
  • Click “OK” and attempt to use Picture Manager again. If the application still does not behave as it should, continue to Step 6.
  • Click the “Start” button, and then click “Control Panel.” After reaching the Control Panel, select “Uninstall a Program” if the Control Panel is set up in the Home View, or “Programs and Features” in the Classic View.
  • Click “Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003,” then click the “Change” button. Note that the Microsoft Office program entry will differ if you have a different version installed.
  • Click the “Reinstall or Repair”radio button and then click”Next.”
  • Select the “Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation” radio button, then click “Install.” If you have not inserted the Microsoft Office CD yet, do so when prompted and click “OK.” This process copies the original installation files from the CD and overwrites the contents of the hard drive, repairing Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
  • Click “OK” once the repair process finishes. You should now be able to use Picture Manager.
