Your computer’s operating system requires drivers to use certain external devices, such as scanners or printers. Printer drivers translate computer files into a printable format that is accessible for the printer. If you are replacing or removing a printer from your computer, you may want to remove the associated drivers, as well. To manually delete a printer driver from Windows XP, you must access the “Printers and Faxes” control panel.
- Click on your “Start” menu, then “Settings” and then “Printers and Faxes” menu. This will show all printers and fax machines currently associated with your computer.
- Delete the printer from your computer if it is currently associated with your computer. Right-click on the printer’s icon and select “Delete.” Confirm the deletion by selecting “Yes” in the pop-up window.
- Access the “Server Properties” menu from the drop-down “File” menu at the top of the window. Select the “Drivers” tab at the top of the window. This will display all printer drivers currently installed on your computer.
- Highlight the printer driver you wish to remove by click on it once. Select the “Remove” button beneath the list of drivers. Click “Yes” in the pop-up window to delete the driver. Repeat this step to delete additional drivers, if necessary.
