How to Update BIOS without a Battery

You are here:

Contrary to popular belief, a laptop can operate without a battery if the laptop’s power cord is in place. If you are having problems booting your laptop and feel the problem lies in BIOS, you may access and update BIOS as you normally would when a battery is present. BIOS are an acronym for Basic Input/output System. When a computer is powered on, BIOS, also known as system firmware, starts the operating system.

  • Connect the laptop power cord to the laptop and a power outlet. You should see a power indicator light appear at the bottom of the laptop screen. The power cord should provide a power supply to the laptop even though there is no battery.
  • Power on the laptop. The process of accessing BIOS varies depending on the manufacturer. Immediately after turning the laptop on, press “F2,” “F12,” “Delete” or “ESC.” Try one of these key options at a time immediately after turning on the laptop, until you see the black and gray BIOS screen. You will have to restart the laptop each time you want to try a different key.

  • Locate the item in the BIOS setup that you would like to change. Save changes as indicated on the BIOS screen. Incorrectly changing a BIOS setting could cause problems with the operating system and/or other software. Ensure that you have adequate knowledge of the BIOS changes you make and how the changes will affect the laptop.
