How to Install a Wireless Internet Router

You are here:

A wireless Internet router is necessary to run wireless Internet. The router is the component that broadcasts the Internet signals to the various devices on the wireless network. Two kinds of routers are generally available for wireless networks: modem routers and wireless routers. Modem routers are usually provided by cable companies and Internet service providers. If you didn’t get one that way, you most likely have a wireless router, which you will need to set up to make your Internet functional.

  • Unplug your modem from its power source.
  • Connect your wireless Internet router to your modem using an Ethernet cable.
  • Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into your modem and other end into the “Internet,” “WAN” or “WLAN” port on your router.
  • Plug the modem into a wall outlet and turn it on. Let it connect to the Internet.
  • Plug your router into a wall outlet and turn it on. It should light up.
  • Connect your computer to an open port on the router using the other Ethernet cable.
  • Type the URL that came with your router into your browser’s address bar. This will open your router’s configurations. Enter the username and password if prompted. This should have come with your router as well.
  • Change the SSID to personalize it and keep your neighbors from accidentally trying to access your router.
  • Set up a network security key using WPA or WP2. This is a form of encryption that will make your router and network more secure.
  • Create a password that will not be easy for others to guess.
  • Click “Save Settings,” “Apply” or “OK” to save the changes you made.
  • Disconnect the Ethernet cable that was connecting your computer to your router.
  • If all of the lights keep flashing, then the wires could be crossed.
  • Some wireless internet routers have different color lights. The main thing is that you want the internet light, the wireless light and the power source light to be the same color and not blinking. This means that the wireless internet router is working properly.
