How to Reset a Password for a Dlink Router

Wireless routers are small devices that broadcast the Internet to a home or office. D-Link routers, like all others, perform this task by broadcasting on a particular frequency that computer wireless cards scan for. Factors such as interference, firmware corruption and inappropriate setting changes can render a router ineffective. You may lose the ability to access the router if you forget the password. Any of these circumstances can be remedied by resetting the router to factory defaults.


Insert the thumbtack into the small hole on the back of the router marked “Reset.” Hold the thumbtack into position for 10 seconds.

Open your Web browser, enter the D-link router’s IP address into the URL field and press Enter. The IP address of D-link routers is usually “”

Click within the white box to the right of the “ID” entry, type “admin” then press Enter. Leave the password field blank.

Click “Tools” located at the upper-left side of the page.

Point the mouse cursor to the “Administrative Settings” box located on the right side of the page.

Enter a new password in the box labelled “Administrative Password.”

Enter the password a second time in the box labelled “Confirm Password.” Click “Apply.”
