How to Repair Epson Printers

Epson printers have a good reputation as economical and reliable. While Epson makes a wide variety of printers to suit virtually every printing need, the most popular of these is the printer-scanner-copier version. Because all-in-one printers are not expensive, problems that occur may tempt you to toss and replace them when things go wrong. But many problems are easy to fix–so before you toss one, try a few simple repairs. You just might find your printer is worth keeping.

Steps

Make sure power to the printer is ON and the printer is in COPY mode. To set the printer in COPY mode, select the HOME button and then select COPY.

Run a printer check to make sure the printer is functioning properly. To run a printer check, turn off and disconnect the printer from your computer. Load a few sheets of paper and then turn the printer power on. Press the HOME button, then SELECT, and OK. From the HOME menu, select MAINTENANCE, press OK, then NOZZLE CHECK, press OK, and then press START. If the printer is working correctly, a diagnostic test page will print; if the test page does not print your printer has an internal problem.

Clean the print heads. Dirty print heads can cause numerous problems. The easiest way to clean print head nozzles is through the Control Panel Maintenance mode on your printer. Load a few sheets of paper into the printer and press the HOME button, then SELECT, and OK. From the HOME menu, select MAINTENANCE, press OK, then select HEAD CLEANING, press OK, and then press START. After approximately two minutes, the Control Panel will display a message and allow you to check the nozzles to ensure they are clean. If the nozzles are extremely dirty, it may take up to four cleanings to remove all dirt and debris.

Make sure power to the printer is ON and the printer is in SCAN mode. To set the printer in COPY mode, select the HOME button and then select SCAN.

Check to ensure Epson Scan is the default scanner. Go to the START button; click DEFAULT PROGRAMS, SET PROGRAM ACCESS and COMPUTER DEFAULTS. Set the Scanner option to Epson Scan and click OK.

Reinstall the scanning software. If you install periodic updates to your operating system, you may need to reinstall scanning software. First, uninstall the software. Turn off and disconnect the cable connector from your printer. From the Control Panel, select Uninstall A Program, select EPSON SCAN. Second, reinstall the scanning software. Insert the installation CD and follow installation instructions. Do not reconnect the printer to your computer until asked to do so in the installation process.

Check for paper jams. While larger pieces of paper are easy to spot and remove, small bits may remain hidden. Unplug the printer, open the printer cover and inspect for small pieces of torn or jammed paper. If your printer has a duplexer, press the buttons on the sides of the duplexer, pull it out and gently remove any caught paper. Replace the duplexer. Pull out the paper try from the front of the printer, turn the printer on its side and inspect the bottom.

Check the quality of the paper. Poor-quality paper can cause problems such as jams and feeding problems. Use only a smooth, high-quality paper.

Reload the paper. If the paper is not loaded correctly, it will not feed correctly. Check to make sure you have the printer set to the correct paper size. You can set paper size from the PRINT command in the FILE menu.
