How to Download a Driver for My Printer

You are here:

What is a driver?

A driver is a small computer program (software) that allows your computer to work with your printer (and other devices). Without the printer’s driver, it will not work properly or possibly not at all.

There are many reasons why someone would need to locate a driver for their printer. For some people, it’s simply that they cannot find the driver disk that originally came with their printer. For others, they may have upgraded their computers operating system to one that is newly released, and they now need to locate a newer driver for that system. Or perhaps the driver disk has been damaged and it is not longer usable. Whatever the reason, locating, downloading and installing the correct driver can be essential to getting your printer working again.

1) You will need to locate and make a note of what make and model your printer is. You can usually find this information on the front, back or bottom of your printer. This information will determine what company website you will need to go to locate your printer’s driver.

Once you know your brand of printer, then it’s time to work on locating where you can find the driver for it. For this guide, we will be listing the locations of the drivers for 10 of the most common brands of printers. If your brand of printer is listed below, follow the instructions for that one to locate and download your driver. If your brand of printer is not listed, try using a search engine like Google to find a list of drivers for it by typing in your brand of printer and the word “drivers” after it.

If after you have installed your correct driver, you are still having problems getting your printer to work, be sure to check these troubleshooting tips to make sure something has not been overlooked.

*Make sure printer is turned on. Standby lights may make a printer appear to be on when it actually isn’t.

*Check to see that your cables that go from your printer to your computer are not loose or damaged. A cable can appear fine, when actually at some point it was bent or damaged. If there appears to be no connection at all between your printer and your computer (printer is not even showing up as a new device being connected), but there is power going to the printer, there is a chance your cable is no longer working.

*Make sure there is nothing jammed in the printer to keep it from working.

*Make sure there is ink in printer and that there are no issues with damaged in cartridges spilling ink inside.

If everything appears to be connected correctly and the driver appears to be properly installed, be sure to check that your printer is set as the “Default” printer. If it is not, each time you tell a document to print, it will be trying to print from another printer (that may or may not even be hooked up to the computer). To check this setting, go to your main Windows desktop and click START, then CONTROL PANEL and go to the PRINTERS AND FAX section. Check to see that the printer you are trying to use shows that it is set at the default printer. If it is not, right click (not left click) on the image of the printer you are trying to use and chose the “Set as default printer” option from the menu. Then be sure to click the save button (or apply) and then try printing again. *
